National Handloom Day: Taneira Launches GI-Tagged Saree Collection

Taneira

New Delhi: As India celebrates National Handloom Day, Taneira, the ethnic wear brand from the House of Tata, has launched an initiative to introduce GI-tagged handloom sarees across its product portfolio.

Strengthening its commitment to authenticity, transparency, and regional craftsmanship, Taneira becomes one of the first Indian saree brands to adopt Geographical Indication (GI) certification for weaves from clusters like Banarasi, Chanderi, and Maheshwari.

This milestone underscores the brand’s dedication to preserving India’s textile heritage and honoring the artistry of local weavers. Each GI-tagged saree not only represents a unique weaving tradition rooted in a specific geography but also offers assurance of origin and quality to the modern Indian consumer.

“We believe in more than just selling sarees – we aim to preserve stories, celebrate heritage, and empower artisan communities,” said Ambuj Narayan, CEO, Taneira. “With GI-tagged handlooms, we are not only bringing regional authenticity to the forefront but also strengthening the value chain for craftspeople who carry forward India’s cultural legacy.”

Taneira’s GI-tagging initiative complements its existing suite of certifications – including Handloom Mark, Silk Mark, Zari Certification, Khadi Certificate, and Pashmina Certification – ensuring each product is an authentic, ethically crafted piece of India’s diverse textile map.

Taneira: Working Closely with Artisan Clusters

To implement this initiative, Taneira is working closely with artisan clusters and vendors, providing legal documentation and certification support, thereby enabling weavers to gain rightful recognition and better economic opportunities. The brand is also expanding its GI-tagged collection to include weaves from nearly ten additional regions.

With this bold step, Taneira reaffirms its vision of making authentic, region-specific handloom sarees accessible to contemporary women across India, while strengthening traditional knowledge systems and sustainable fashion practices.
